Civil War Veterans Letters About The Louisiana Tigers At Gettysburg.

Description: Civil War Veteran's Letters About The Louisiana Tigers At Gettysburg. This grouping contains the recollections of 4 Civil War veterans writing to a New York publisher, John White Johnston of Rochester, New York. These 4 veterans wrote, or drew diagrams (maps), relating to the movements of the Louisiana Tigers at Gettysburg from 1916-17. The first letter, Typed, is by Henry W. Taylor, 7th West Virginia Infantry, dated from Gettysburg, Aug. 26, 1916. "Dear Sir:- Under separate cover I am sending you the pencil sketch of the Charge of the Louisiana Tigers up Cemetery Hill, July 2nd, 1863......charge was made about dusk, by 1700 men. Of which 1700 men less than 500 returned.......Union lines on top of the hill is practically concealed by the clouds of smoke caused by artillery fire, and Ricket's Battery is the action......." Taylor goes on to say is will send a better water-color rendering...much more, signed Henry W. Taylor. Accompanying this letter are two sketches; the first is a lesser work, showing Culp's Hill, Wainwright Ave, East Cemetery Hill, Baltimore Pike, and lists the placement of the monuments (see photo). The is written on the back of the printed letterhead for "W.H. Tipton / The Wartime Photographer / Chambersburg Street, Gettysburg." The 2nd sketch shows many more markers (Union) and his 7th WV Infantry marker. (see photo).A six page manuscript letter is from A. N. Campbell, Sgt, Bryan's Company, Virginia, Artillery. Writing from Union W. Virginia, Nov. 25, 1916. "My dear Mr. Johnston, Campbell refers the OR's to Johnston,..."you will find that the only Louisiana Troops that were in the battle of Gettysburg were Hays Brigade of Early's Division, Ewell's Corps, and Nichols Brigade, of Johnson's division, same Corps and the Washington (Louisiana) Artillery with the reserve artillery of Longstreet's Corps.....Gen, Hayes report of his brigade in the battle... and he makes no mention of the Tigers having fought or charged more gallantly than any other soldier in the brigade......As I remember "The Tigers," was a battalion organized by a Major "Bob" Wheat and was known when it came out as Wheat's Battalion, and sometimes the Louisiana Tigers.....Wheat was one of Walkers associates in his fillebustering in Nicaraugua in 1855.....he gathered these men from the steamboats, and wharves on the Mississippi River, principally at New Orleans.........They were the toughest looking lot of men i had ever seen.....I remembered that General Richard Taylor, the son of President Zack Taylor was the first commander of Hayes' brigade in 1862.....The knives you speak of the Tigers carrying were very common in the army at the commencement of the war, thousands of soldiers carried them then, but the most of them found them to be of no use to them and really an incumbrance and got rid of them, The most of them were made by the blacksmiths of the country and were heavy and clumsy. (mentions Gen. Gordon's book, and goes into telling how bad he thinks it is).....Gen. Lee knew he had made a mistake and he was big enough to man to acknowledge it. If Lee had taken Longstreet's advice it might have been better for him. Longstreet in my opinion was by far the biggest man in the Army of Northern Virginia, next to Lee. I do not except Stonewall Jackson........" Much, much more.Campbell's 2nd letter written on May 22, 1917. "Dear Sir, Talking about the book he is working on, sending it for Johnston to read and critique. Wants to know if J. is going to the Confederate meeting at Washington,D.C. 5-7 next month (June). 2 pages, manuscriptCampbell's 2nd letter written on May 22, 1917. Wants to know if J. is going to the Confederate meeting at Washington,D.C. 5-7 next month (June). 2 pages, manuscript.J. Loomis Sowers. 4 page manuscript letter dated about April 13, 1917. (Missing 1st page). "the artillery having opened on the right and left at 4 o'clock and continued for some time, I was ordered by General Ewell to advance upon Cemetery Hill with my two brigades that were in position....(could be from an interview with Col. E.B. Cope. - see 4th letter Cope interview). All content so see photo of page 2.J. Loomis Sowers. 3 page manuscript letter with sketch. April 13, 1917. Interview with Col. E.B.
