Description: Williams Cleaner Bullet - Type 3 - dug in a Yankee Bivouac camp following the 2nd day of the Battle of Nashville TN. December 16th, 1864. It rained that night, and ammunition was ruined. Bullets were then discarded on the forest floor. I dug approximately 1,000bullets from this area in 1976 using a state-of-the-art White's Metal detector. I was a High School Senior. The gap you see in the bullet once held a zinc ring. It was designed to clean the bore of the gun upon firing - once for every 10 shots. Over time, in the ground, the Zinc eroded, and the lead bullet turned white because of oxidation. These bullets were dropped, never fired. Manufactured for the Union army but when supply wagons were raided, the South used them also. Commonly found in late war battlefields. I have been a token collector for a while now and stuff is starting to pile up around here.... Along with some Civil War bullets I dug when I was a younger man.
