Description: this is a lovely vintage oil painting depicting the clipper ship "Ocean Telegraph" which was launched in March of 1854 to be used in the California trade - it was built in Medford, MA (outside Boston) by a builder named J.C. Curtis - it was considered to be an "extreme clipper ship" with a length of 227 feet with a weight of 1495 tons - there was a huge female figure carved on her bow - when all of her sails were set up, she had 11,000 yards of canvas sail - the ship made 8 voyages to California & back under Captain George Willis - each voyage from New York to California lasted 97 days - the famous marine artist Montague Dawson (1890-1973) created a gorgeous painting of the "Ocean Telegraph" after which this painting was created by a very talented artist named T. Archibald - this painting which was done on masonite board appears to have been done in the 1930's 1940's - it is very well-painted by the artist with incredibly realistic dark blue-green & white-capped ocean waves contrasted against a pale blue sky with off-white puffy clouds floating in the sky - the ship is leaning far to port side in the steady wind & the huge amount of sails are billowed fully in the wind - the painting measures 15" x 18" sight size, & is in very good vintage condition - it is well-enhanced by its original gilded wooden frame which is in good vintage condition -
