Description: There is a reason Gaudy Welsh has been a popular art pottery for so many years. It just makes a person cheerful to look at the spontaneous decoration on every piece. The cheerful lines just dance around the surface. The colors of cobalt and rusty red are bold and the designs are as current today as when they were made. This sugar and creamer set would look stunning on any shelf or cabinet. The lidded sugar bowl is 5" high and 6.5" across the handles. The base is 3.5" wide. There is some gilt loss on the top of the handles, the lid finial and the rim around the opening. I found no cracks or chips but there is a very mild crazing on the cream color glaze inside. The creamer is 3.5" high and 5" wide with a 2.75" base. It is also free of any cracks or chips and has the same age crazing as the sugar. Both pieces are marked on the base with a stamp impressed into the clay that reads "Queen and ENGLAND" There are some other letters but I can't make them out. Perhaps there is a Gaudy Welsh expert out there who could help with that. There is also a red paint mark on each piece that I think might be the artists mark. Not sure about that but the marks are different on the two pieces. I was told they are from 1820- 1880. I can't verify that since I don't know the maker.
