The Indian Head Penny was first minted in 1859 and is composed of .880 copper. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James B. Longacre. Longacre decided to use Liberty on the obverse of the coin. Legend states that he modeled Liberty after his daughter Sarah wearing a headdress of an Indian Chief who visited the mint. No one knows if Sarah was the model as James B. Longacre once stated Venus, a Greek statue, was his inspiration for the design. The reverse was first designed to resemble laurel and then was changed to oak.
