Description: Textiles are an impressive part of the Bolivian culture. This beautiful antique hand woven wool aguaya was used by women in Bolivia to carry their children on their backs. These interesting fabrics are also used as rugs, blankets and totes and are considered works of fabric art. Made by the indigenous people who use the diversity of native plants, minerals, or insects to dye the llama and alpaca yarn into distinctive colors that were decorated with anthropomorphic characters, symbolizing indigenous religious beliefsTwo woven 19 inch x 32 inch panels of vivid brown, orange, red, green and blue striped bands of different widths, some of the wider ones embellished with fantastic designs. On one band, whimsical horses form and abstract patterns as they face two directions, while another patterned band shows a horse and colt. Geometric designs join to make a complex and wonderful piece of fiber art. These two bands are joined in the center to make the 32" x 38" aguaya carrying cloth. Woven by hand on a backstrap loom, this aguaya was purchased in La Paz, Bolivia.It is in excellent condition. The colors are amazingly bright and unfaded, it is clean and I found no holes or other damage and comes from a smoke free, pet free home.
