Description: Colour Scheme is a somewhat sinister story of character and atmosphere, part inter-national spy story, pact detective story that is entertaining and full of suspense. The scene is New Zealand during World War II; the characters an ill-assorted, bizarre group of New Zealanders, Britishers, and Maoris. Colonel Claire and his wife have two children, an awkward un-sophisticated daughter of twenty-five and a son who is studying Morse code at home in preparation for war aviation. Mrs. Claire's brother, a distinguished but irascible physician, lives with them. The Claires have a genius for collecting impossible people, and at the moment are burdened with two: a seedy individual named Smith, who is never completely sober, and an apparently unscrupulous businessman named Questing to whom the Colonel is under heavy financial obligations. The household are united in their dislike for Questing but at odds in practically everything else. With the first chapter one senses something queer and something very wrong. The tension mounts as irritations and hatreds grow, as strange signals go out from the cliff above the sea. What was Mr. Questing up to, anyway? Did anyone die in the Sulphur Spring? Why did Septimus Falls get the others together to discuss alibis?
