Description: This listing is for a lovely Copal gemstone which is an organic gem that comes from tree sap just like Amber does. However, Copal is much younger than Amber and it is a subfossil that comes from native tropical deciduous tree resin that is anywhere from 10,000 to 5 million years old. Many people confuse it with Baltic Amber, but both Copal and Amber are valuable and unique in their own right. Amber is millions of years older than Copal. Both resin gems are natural in origin. Both usually have inclusions. While this gem is transparent it has many thread like inclusions inside, which could be threads from deteriorated plants or roots, but my guess would be the threads inside came from a spiderweb that was caught inside the resin before it hardened since the threads are all very thin and the same thickness.like silk. Color: Columbia is known for Copal that is a canary yellow-greenish. This gemstone is amber in color but has greenish yellow highlights. I photographed this gem in different light sources and as you can see sometimes the color is amber , sometimes it is amber with yellow highlights and under some lights it has a yellow green look, but mostly it is amber color with yellow highlights as the video shows - (at least that's how it looks on my monitor, but different monitors show different colors). Guess it all depends on how the light hits it. I day light it is an amber color and when the sun hits it it seems to glow yellow to gold highlights. Treatment: All Copal used in jewelry is treated to increase its hardness because it is fragile and light in weight. Heat and pressure is often used to treat Copal and might have deepened the color. The treatment is permanent. The treatment makes the Copal suitable for jewelry, but still I'd be careful with it if you set it. Many people who collect organic gemstones might want this gem just to add to their collection. Inclusions: Typical of organic resins this gem does have inclusions which you can find uner 10X magnification. The inclusions look like fine silky threads - as I mentioned above like a spider web threads that got caught in the resin although I can't be certain what the fine threads are from. This gem is transparent, but the threads inside will not be seen with the naked eye. However, the threads inside do seem to catch the light adding to the highlights of the stone. Size: This gemstone is light in weight for its size. It weighs about 2.70 carats and it is about 14X10 mm. You can see the exact measurements in the photos of the gemstone in the millimeter guage. I have decided to sell some gemstones that at one time I had the intention to use, but never got around to it. I enlarge my gem photos to show detail and clarity, so keep in mind the stones are usually smaller than the photos appear, so please pay close attention to the dimensions. The colors might look different on different monitors so double check my description for color. I always say the weight is "about" a certain amount of carats because I realize that not all weight scales weigh in exactly the same and can be off by a tiny fraction up or down, but all in all my weight calculations are fairly accurate. Please note I am not a gem dealer. I have been collecting stones my entire life and studied color stones with the GIA. I'm just selling several pieces I that never had the opportunity to use in jewelry, and I'd like to see them go to someone who will enjoy and use them. I do not accept returns as my goal is to thin out my collections now that I have retired, so please be sure you really love this gemstone before you buy it. Feel free to ask any questions you might have before you bid or buy. I love chatting about gems. Shipping is free of charge in the USA. I do not sell overseas at this time. Note that now eBay is required to charge taxes so I am guessing that taxes will be added to this purchase via eBay. Thank you for checking out my listing and happy eBay shopping!
