Description: COMBAT CODES - A Full Explanation and Listing of British, Commonwealth and Allied Air Force Unit Codes sine 1938. (ISBN : 1840372818 Flintham, Vic & Andrew Thomas 2003, new copy, hard bound in dust jacket, 9 x 11, glossy page stock, 246 pages, massively illustrated in B&W and color. From the inception on of the RAF in 1918 the new service developed traditions fast. In particular, its squadrons assumed a combination of heraldic devices and colourful markings with which to identify machines and inspire men. With the potential onset of war in 1938, the very public and well-known unit markings were replaced by two-letter codes, designed to confuse the enemy. Through the uneasy period leading to the formal declaration of war, these codes became well-known locally and there was a second set for application with the onset of war; in the event these were, perhaps surprisingly, applied from 24 August 1939, a good week in advance of the formal declaration. As the war progressed the unit codes expanded to incorporate numerals and the system was extended to the USAAF and Commonwealth and Allied units. But to preserve secrecy, the codes were only ever described and listed in a series of top-secret documents and each new edition required destruction of the previous one. Hence, there appears to be no surviving official record of unit codes allocated through World War II. Compiling a list of codes has thus been a major piece of detective work that the authors have tackled with relish, building on the work of earlier researchers. Listed and described in detail are the air force unit codes applied by the RAF, Commonwealth and Allies throughout the war, including the USAAF and US Army light aviation units. In addition some Commonwealth and European air forces continued the practice for some time after the war, while the RAF used many variants in the post-war years; indeed the RAF still uses a limited form of single-letter unit identifiers. All of these types of unit codes are described and listed in what is destined to become the definitive work on the subject ******************************************************************************************************************************* THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.
