Description: The First Sergeant was the senior sergeant of his company; the most important man under the commissioned officers and, in many cases, the “heart" of the company. In both armies his rank was designated by a tape or cloth lozenge over three inverted chevrons. The color usually indicated the branch of service; i.e. infantry - blue. Although in many cases, in the Confederate army black was used. Preferably, the chevrons were made from wool worsted tape dyed the appropriate color, but in the exigencies of campaign, strips of raw cloth were also used. Some were crudely applied while others were delicately and painstakingly sewn to their owner's coat. When available, a sergeant's stripe of the same color material was also applied to the trouser seam. Within the Southern army in some cases, noncommissioned officers may have at time even worn no rank insignia, particularly in the latter years of the fighting. Sergeants and First Sergeants were generally armed as the other ranks in the company with musket and bayonet. Officially authorized swords for non-commissioned officers were almost always dispensed with in the field and rarely seen after the first months of the war. This exquisite print depicts a Confederate First Sergeant during the Civil War era.
