From the East, the French, British and Americans of the First Army inexorable take ridgeline after ridgeline, while the British Eighth Army closes in from the south. It seems only a matter of time... The Eight Army is lagging, however, and with Rommel's Panzer troops now concentrated, the German Command knew now was the time for one good spoiling blow before Montgomery attacked. For the brief two-week period between the time that Rommel's troops joined the lingering foothold and Montgomery was able to attack it, the German forces would be able to muster one last overwhelming attack. The attack would be the last chance for victory in North Africa; the battlefield would have to be chosen meticulously for best possible advantage. Von Arnim, Rommel's counterpart in Tunisia, opted for an attack against the British in the North, to push them back from the critical supply ports at Bizerta and Tunis, staking all on the capture of the ridges and hills necessary for their defense. But Rommel, the wiley Desert Fox, vetoed the plan. Germany would not be best served by wasting its elite armored forces in the worst tank country in Tunisia, and against the best forces the Allies had available. The attack in the north could accomplish nothing, not even delay the inevitable for very long. A different plan was formulated. Rommel's plan was to strike in the south, where tanks could be used to good advantage, in country well suited for the, and against the poorly equipped French and the inexperienced Americans. Von Arnim's 10th and 21st Panzer Divisions would smash through the U.S. Combat Command A at Sidi Bou Zid, cut their way across the open basin at Sbeitla, and then turn north to take Thala and Sbiba, tying down all Allied reserves to the North. Rommel's own Kampfgruppe DAK, arriving a day after von Arnim's troops, would capture Gafsa, drive north through the Kasserine Pass, and capture the vital supply and communication center at Tebessa. If Tebessa could be taken, and held, the American southern flank would crumble, sending the Allies reeling back to Algeria. Imminent defeat could be turned to great victory overnight: it all depended on taking Kasserine Pass in time...
