Description: Cumberland County, Tennessee, in 1956, celebrated it's 100 Year Centennial. The Tennessee Legislature, in November, 1855, passed an act entitled: "An Act to Establish the County of Cumberland in this State." The first County Court met in April of 1856, and Cumberland County was off and running!!! Much has been written about Cumberland County, TN, and a comprehensive history was published in 1956: "Cumberland County's First Hundred Years", written by Helen Bullard and Joseph Marshall Krechniak. This book is a must read. Original copies come to market on occasion, as well as reprints. As the Centennial year approached, a Centennial Committee was formed. Many men grew beards, Ladies agreed to wear long dresses during the Centennial week, which was planned for July 1-7, 1956. Downtown merchants donated merchandise for the "Centennial Auction." This Centennial Currency was given out in the normal course of Commerce - goods & services purchased - for some Months and Weeks before the Centennial week, and could be "Spent" at the Centennial Auction. Men could shave if they bought a "Shave permit" pin back button. Many Celebrations and events were held to celebrate this 100 year event! Other eBay sellers occasionally have Centennial memorabilia - pin back buttons, etc. Selling today is a FIFTY DOLLAR BILL of the Original Centennial Currency printed in 1956. This note has been carefully stored for these 61 years, and is not torn or faded.
