Description: CYPRAEIDAE Chelycypraea testudinaria SPECIAL COLOR Philippines. Samar. Borongan area. 10-25 m. 2017. 84.3 mm. “Most collectors look at the “testu” as to a boring cowry: much the same fate undergoes the Atlantic “sterco”. However, experienced collectors with a good eye for aesthetics find these shells in some of their forms as among the most attractive collector’s items. Both species display “Zoila” qualities and are extreme in their possibilities of color displays. We here deal with an almost entirely black colored “testu”, with an open window of cream on the lower half of the dorsum only. The testudinaria is particularly rare in the Visayas. We only dived one dead shell. But the species is apparently common along the open ocean coast of the eastern Philippine Islands, where fishermen can come up with impressive quantities if the money is available. Estimation: for connoisseurs and cypraeologists. A special color out of thousands." - Poppe Documented by Conchology Inc. Please enjoy the detailed images to confirm overall quality and condition.
