Description: Dante's Inferno:Translated to English by Henry F. Cary Illustrated by Gustave Doré"New Edition", c. 1884With critical and explanatory notes, life of Dante, and ChronologyP. F. Collier, New York, publishers182 pages75-80 etchings by Gustave Doré (depending on the source; I did not count them, but all pages seem to be present.)Approx. 13.5" x 10.25" x 1.5"As to the condition see all photos with regard to the following:Front and back covers show considerable fading and wear, especially on edges. The vast majority of the pages are still held in the binding. A few are loose and even fewer (less than 10?) are completely free of the binding. None seem to be missing.Frontispiece portrait with overlay is one of the pages loose from the binding.Much of the book is in good condition for its age, pages and binding. With that said, there are areas that are not so good, the worst pages being 89-96 which are barely hanging on by a string and very tattered about the edges. There is a single photo showing this particular area. Some pages, though not all by any means, have what I call "age spots". Again, see the photo showing this. While I tried to show the worst parts of the book in the photos, there are many beautiful pages with Gustave Doré's iconic etchings. I cannot stress enough for all photos to be viewed with care. Sold as is. Let the eye of the beholder decide! This book has been in my family for probably close to 100 years. My grandmother was the high school librarian for many years and this is where the book came from prior to belonging to our family.
