In the interwar period and during the Second World War, it was in service with the national air force, and was also exported.In 1915, the Darne arms company of Saint-Étienne received an order from the French government for the production of .303 British caliber Lewis machine guns, of which 3266 were produced over the following years.In the following year, 1916, the company began to develop a new model of a belt-fed machine gun designed for mass production, that is, structurally simplified and without the excessive finishing typical of weapons of that period.
