DAVID LEACH WILLOW TREE CHARGER OF MUSEUM QUALITY

Description: This listing is for a VERY large MUSEUM LEVEL CHARGER by DAVID LEACH (1911 -2005) who was the first son of BERNARD LEACH (1887 - 1979). It is very large at 13 1/2 inches diameter (34 cm) by 2 5/8 inches in high (6.6 cm). This is a quite substantial piece at about 10 pounds. It is made with stoneware clay with a rich black / brown overall tenmoku glaze. The primary design motif is one of Mr. Leach's often used Willow Tree motifs in a striking black showing through a creamy white dolomite glaze color achieved using a wax resist technique. The Willow Tree is incredibly simple and graceful with sweeping drooping limbs with a hint of foliage at the limb tips. It exudes the simplistic design feelings of his father before him. The tenmoku glaze has two minor flaws with glaze skips at 8 and 11 o'clock. This can occur when there is a bit of clay dust left on a bisqued piece (first firing) before the glaze is applied. This is one of the most impressive David Leach pieces I have encountered. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations other than the glaze skips. It is signed with his DL cypher. This indicates that he threw the vase as well as glazed it instead of having an apprentice involved. This piece was produced at the Lowerdown Pottery at Bovey Tracey, Devon, England. David leach is represented in many museums around the world including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
