These ruins constitute one of the most imposing architectural complexes of all antiquity to have survived in modern times. The construction of the great sanctuary must have gone on for several centuries. It has been determined that the great terrace of the temple dates from the beginning of the first century A.D., and that the temple itself dates around the time of Septimius Severus.'
