Description: Death-Blows at Orthodoxy, by Robert G. Ingersoll. Edited and published by E. Haldeman-Julius of Girard, Kansas. Stapled softcover; 31 pages; approx. 8½” x 5½”. No publication date is given, but it appears to have been printed in the 1930’s or 1940’s. This was item B-554 in the Haldeman-Julius listings. Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899) was an American lawyer, prolific author, orator, notorious freethinker, and even, briefly, the Attorney General of Illinois (1867-1869). He had a flair for publicity and visibility, and aroused the opposition of a great many conservatives and religious leaders in the last third of the 19th century—in fact, since his writings continued to be republished long after his death, he was still controversial and argued with/about until at least the early 1950’s. (One might think that would amuse and please him, rabble-rousing for an extra half century!) Condition of the pamphlet is “good” or a bit better: original staples are still intact, and the pages are secure; no marks in or out; no tears or dog-ears; the background of the cover is a little more red and a little less orange than the listing pic shows. Careful wrapping and fast shipping. Please look around the store. Lots of books & other media, quilt & cross stitch patterns, car mags & catalogs, home décor, and many more treasures-- and more listed every day.
