George Bull (16341710) was an English theologian and Bishop of St David's. He was born, 25 March 1634, in the parish of St. Cuthbert, Wells, and educated in the grammar school at Wells, and then at Blundell's School in Tiverton under Samuel Butler. Before he was fourteen years old he went into residence at Exeter College, Oxford, where he became a friend of Thomas Clifford. In 1649, his tutor Baldwin Ackland refused to take the engagement, and together they left the university and settled at North Cadbury in Somerset. He wrote four major theological treatises in Latin, one on justification and three on the Trinity. Bull wrote the Defensio fidei Nicenae in 1680 to defend himself against the charge of Socinianism. Though three publishers refused to publish the work, William Jane, regius professor of divinity at Oxford, convinced Bishop Fell to intervene and have it published in 1685. Despite the delay in publication, it received the endorsement of Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, the Gallican bishop of Meaux, and the acclamation of his English colleagues, making the work the standard defence of Nicene orthodoxy.
