Description: Through one of the earliest post-war route expansions and long postponed, Delta Airlines' Air Mail Route 54 was dramatically changed on December 1, 1945 from a small but important feeder route into a major north-south trunk route. This inaugural service permitted Delta Air Lines to connect the Great Lakes region via major midwest and southeast cities with Florida. This transition was effected by the northward extension from Cincinnati nonstop to Chicago, and the southeast extension from Knoxville via Asheville, North Carolina, Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina, Augusta and Savannah, Georgia, via Jacksonville, Florida to Miami.Delta Airlines provided a cachet for the inaugural mail. This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 54 flight from Miami, Florida to Knoxville, Tennessee and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 54N5.
