He is decorated with badges of four awards: neck cross of a Commander of the French Order of the Legion of Honor, chest Chevalier Cross of the French Royal Order of Saint Louis, badge of the "Decoration of The Lily" introduced by the Bourbons in April of 1814 and chest Chevalier Cross of the Order of the Iron Crown (Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy). The 1820 annual edition of the "Annuaire officiel des officiers de l'armée active" (the first edition to mention officers with their French military awards - those of the Legion and of St. Louis) exposes the names of only four colonels of artillery in possession of the two awards visible on our portrait - Commander's Cross of the Legion of Honor and Chevalier Cross of St. Louis: -Jean Pierre Doguerau (in 1816 (date on the portrait) this man was aged 42) -Baron Cyprien-Joseph Raffon de Val (in 1816 he was 40 years old) -Baron Charles-Pierre-Lubin Griois (44 years old) -Baron Francois Joseph Henrion (40 years old) The next step was to turn to the "Dictionnaire des colonels de Napoleon" by Danielle and Bernard Quintin (Paris 1996). In this book we find all these four men who became colonels still in epoch of the 1st Empire. Only two of them - Raffon de Val and Griois were in possession of the Iron Crown. Of the former, no portraits could be found online or in the reference literature, but when we started with Colonel Griois the web immediately showed our portrait. Today, this man is also remembered for his 430-page-memoirs (edited in 1909 by his grand-nephew). And now the final chord: Not mentioned in online auction catalogue this portrait has a remnant of an old label on the back cover of the frame with information about the sitter. This was discovered by us after receiving the postal package. And in this legend we read the name of our Colonel Griois (see image). The artist was born before 1780 in Paris and died after 1833. He studied under Joseph-Benoit Suvée at the l'Ecole de l'Academie in Paris (1787-1795). Fribourg exhibited at the Parisian Salon from 1799 to 1827.
