Description: The articles offered in this book were selected on the basis of the experience of the editors in teaching medical German at Vanderbilt University. Part of the material has been successfully used in mimeographed form in the classroom. The introductory chapter on the structure and functions of the human body in general is followed by discussion of such specific subjects as the nature and treatment of certain diseases, the development of the cell, and the problems of heredity. A considerable amount of the text deals with significant phases not extensively represented heretofore in the anthologies of scientific German. three of the six chapters should be suitable for students specializing in biology as well as for those entering upon the study of medicine. These readings are graded to some extent and may well be taken up in the order in which they occur. The first two chapters are not in the order in which they occur. The first two chapters are not only more general in content, but also their subject matter is as a rule more familiar to the student than is that of the sections devoted to specific fields. Depending on the needs of the individual class, this book may be used as an introductory text or as a supplement to a more elementary work. It is intended primarily for students with about three semesters of German.
