For calibration the scale requires a 500g weight. I don't have one and I didn't really feel like buying a set of weights. My son makes fun of me for what he referred to as my hillbilly work-around, but it found I functional and free:My research told me that nickels are a standard 5g from the mint. I bought a roll of nickels from the bank. I found the newest nickels and found 10 nickels that all weighed the same. Ideally if your scale arrives properly calibrated then 10 newish nickels will weigh 50g.A glass of water weighing *about* 500g is then used to calibrate.Before calibrating, put the jar on the scale so I can tell that I am close to 500g. I want the weight to be slightly under 500g, so remove water until that is so. (It's easier to add more water if it's underweight than it is to remove water. Hence the reason for being slightly under weight.)Put the scale in calibration mode and set the jar on the scale. once it passes, remove the jar and add your 10 clean not-worn nickels to the scale. If the nickels weigh UNDER 50g, then add more water to the jar and recalibrate.
