Description: Dime Bank made from Military Shell or Industrial Part. The type of part or the machinery it was made from is unknown. This steel bank with oak base was made by mu grandfather from some piece of military or industrial apparatus. The type of part and its use are unknown. The bank stands about 5" high. The diameter of the metal part is 2-1/16". The bottom 1/2" or so of the metal part is about 2.3" in diameter. The steel part appears to be one piece. There is a three legged flat piece with a 1/4"-20 tapped hole in it that is soldered into the steel part at the step. The wooden bottom is made of stained oak with a 1/4"-20 steel stud sticking up to mate with the tapped hole inside the steel part. The wooden base is about 3-1/2" in diameter, and about 1/2" high. There is green felt on the bottom to obscure the head of the threaded stud and to prevent the base from marring the surface it is placed on. The exterior of the steel part has two etched bands. One band is 1-3/4" wide, the other is 1/4" wide. The slot for the dime to enter is neatly made and properly sized. My grandfather was a tool and die maker. He used a metal-cutting lathe to make the base. He probably turned the bottom edge of the steel piece on the same lathe. My grandfather died in 1944, so this is older than that. This might be considered trench art. There is corrosion on the steel part, but there is no deep rust pitting on the exterior. We have not attempted to clean or polish the steel part. It is time to pass this along to another generation. You can be the next owner of this family treasure.
