Description: Dissertation Tempo Fluctuation in the Romantic Era as revealed by Nineteenth Century Sources and Applied to Selected Choral Compositions '90 Mayhall 240912 Ronald Bruce Mayhall DMA University of Oklahoma 1990Candidate Doctor of Musical ArtsAdvisor: Dennis Shrock, etal from Abstract"Although tempo fluctuation is a generally accepted aspect of performance practice of some works from the Romantic Era, especially the piano compositions of Frederic Chopin, there is much confusion, disagreement or simply lack of knowledge on the part of performers regarding this salient feature of the Romantic style. Two approaches to performances of earlier works by twentieth-century singers and players contribute to this situation: first, the use by some performers of twentieth-century ideals in recreating music written in previous eras; and secondly, the assumption of common practice among the composers and performers of the Romantic Era.
