Description: *** RARE BOOK *** Dogs, Devils, and Demons: Lore and Legend of the Dog By Louis L. Vine Hardcover: 146 Pages — Publisher: Exposition Press; First Edition (1971) From the dust jacket flaps: Most people would take it as a truism that the dog is man's best friend. Certainly, no animal is more a symbol of fidelity. Many ancient cultures deified the dog, but others painted an entirely different picture through their mythology and legends. This two-sided view of the dog is the subject of this book. Dr. Louis L. Vine writes, "Even as a new-tamed wolf, he must have been ingratiating with his panting grin and his wagging tail. Intelligent, good-humored, unselfish, readily imitative, he has followed " man's orders, even in the course of his evolution from wild beginnings... "But- "Crouching somewhere beyond and beneath the ancient close fellowship there is still the sense that here is an alien creature, one that looks back to a forefather that was man's enemy." In ancient Ethiopia, the dog was a god. In ancient Egypt, he was not apotheosized but nevertheless thought to have magical powers. What the early Greeks thought of the dog might well be exemplified by the mythological Cerberus, guardian of the Gates of Hell. The Holy Bible, strangely enough, has nothing but contempt for the dog. He is "unholy," "blatantly ignorant" or "incapable of appreciation." Dog "demons" were exorcised in Salem, Massachusetts. Dog legends, both positive and negative, are still profuse throughout Europe and America. Dogs can supposedly foretell death and tragedy and even see ghosts. Intermingled with these superstitions, however, are documented cases of strange canine abilities-counting, spelling, understanding human language, an amazing homing instinct and manifestations of what might be called extrasensory perception. Psychic researchers both here in America and in the Soviet Union believe this area of study is worth exhaustive investigation. The author, a veterinarian of twenty-seven years' experience, also talks about various old wives' tales that still persist and relates them to the quackery of early veterinary practices in America. Readers will enjoy Dr. Vine's personal, colorful and often witty style. Dog lovers and devotees of folklore· will find much to fascinate them within these pages. About the Author DR. Louis L.
