Description: Brand new LP. DRAGONFLY - Silent Nights LP High Roller Records, black vinyl, ltd 250, 4 page insert, A5 photo card, All audio restored and mastered from vinyl and tape sources by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY in October 2021. Back in the early eighties, London's East End was a true hot spot for the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. The potential and quality of the bands emerging from the area was amplified by those that shot to fame, such as Iron Maiden and Angel Witch. The iconic Ruskin Arms pub played a pivotal role in the career of bands and their Thursday night 'trial gigs' simply were a make or break deal to land a regular slot.Dragonfly were part of this scene, a band of young musicians with no money, no boundaries and an abundance of enthusiasm. It didn't take long before the band penned some original numbers and became an established act at the Ruskins and further afield, which called for a product that would keep the name Dragonfly on everybody's lips. This would become the »Dragonfly E.P.«; a selection of songs that, of all places, was recorded in the basement of a pet shop near the Ruskin Arms. The self-released E.P, with a microscopic press of just 500 copies, inserted in hand-folded and superglued sleeves, came into circulation in 1980. The quality and musicianship that made the »Dragonfly E.P.« one of the more in-depth and substantial NWOBHM singles lived on in other bands such as Sapphire, Trilogy and Terraplane. With the resurgence of the NWOBHM, the value of the »Dragonfly E.P.« skyrocketed to astronomical proportions but also triggered a growing interest in unreleased material from this four-piece unit that was an 'all original' band from the very start. This album features demo recordings and alternative (older) versions of tracks and finally has made the »Dragonfly E.P.« available to the wider audience the band aimed to reach in its early stages. Clever songwriting, melodic vocals and a lot of guitar are the key elements of this repertoire. Paul van der Burght Dragonfly was a lesser-known band from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Like many bands from this era, Dragonfly embraced the raw and energetic sound that defined the NWOBHM style. Though they didn’t achieve the same commercial success as bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, or Def Leppard, Dragonfly still gained recognition in the underground metal scene for their contributions during this pivotal period in heavy metal history. Musical Style and SoundNWOBHM Sound: Dragonfly’s music captures the quintessential elements of NWOBHM—energetic guitar riffs, driving bass lines, and powerful, melodic vocals. Their sound is rooted in the classic hard rock and proto-metal of the 1970s, but with the faster tempos and edgier production that characterized the NWOBHM movement.Melodic Metal: Dragonfly focused on melody, harmonized guitar leads, and catchy hooks, making them accessible while still maintaining a heavy metal edge.DIY Spirit: Like many bands from the NWOBHM scene, Dragonfly’s recordings often had a raw, unpolished production, which added to the authenticity and underground appeal of their music.Notable ReleaseDragonfly’s most notable release is their 1982 self-titled single, which featured two tracks, "Silent Nights" and "Mercury Rain." The single showcased their melodic yet hard-hitting sound, earning them a cult following among NWOBHM enthusiasts.LegacyDespite their short-lived career and limited discography, Dragonfly remains a part of the NWOBHM legacy, with their single becoming a collectible item among metal fans and vinyl collectors. Their contribution to the underground metal scene of the early 80s is appreciated by those who delve deep into the more obscure corners of the NWOBHM genre. 50 Similar NWOBHM Artists:QuartzRavenTygers of Pan TangSamsonPraying MantisCloven HoofAngel WitchGrim ReaperWitchfyndeBlitzkriegJaguarDiamond HeadSatanTokyo BladeHolocaustDemonGirlschoolTankFistSavageAvengerBattleaxeVardisChateauxWitchfinder GeneralTrespassWhite SpiritBitches SinStormtrooperRogue MaleBlack RoseRogue MaleBashful AlleySpartan WarriorSweet SavageLegendDark StarMythraElixirTysondogWarfareSavageAtomkraftSaracenSledgehammerSalemSaxonOverdriveSledgehammerBleak HouseDragonfly, while remaining an obscure act within the NWOBHM scene, contributed to the rich and diverse tapestry of the movement, delivering the melodic yet powerful sound that continues to resonate with metal fans who seek out hidden gems from this era.
