Description: Dropping the Pilot and Vae Victis 1871. Two half-tone prints from drawings by Sir John Tenniel RA. 'Dropping the Pilot' commemorates Kaiser Wilhelm's removal of Bismark in 1890 and 'Vae Victis 1871' the victory of Germany over the French in 1871. Note across the top of both prints clearly states 'The Art Journal London H Virtue* & Co Ltd.' Printed on a heavy duty 'cartridge' type paper, the condition is fair / good. There is a minor 1cm tear to the top edge of DPT and both prints have tiny holes along the long edge where binding was present. Both prints are foxed (VV more than DTP, and indeed it appears to have suffered a more substantial substance spillage at some point). These will need to be attended to if the images are to be brought back to scratch. However both posses good strong and unfaded images. Both prints are portrait and of an identical size of approximately 25cm wide x 33cm tall. * H Virtue is one of a number of names ascribed to a British publisher which operated between the 1820's and 1908.
