Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins, it is time to move them along to new homes. Here is a well centered intriguing bronze infrequently seen type of AE3 measuring 18mm in diameter that was issued under Aurelian between 270-272AD. This interesting double portrait coin has Aurelian on the obverse and Vabalathus on the reverse. Vabalathus was the ruler of the then Kingdom of Palmyra who became Dux Romanorum in 266-271AD and Augustus over the area in 271AD. Gallienius refused to accept this arrangement and sent several abortive expeditions to restore full Roman rule. It was a very unsettling time for the empire and long story short, Vabalathus was eventually led off to Rome as a captive. The coin has very good detail and full legends. These were struck at the Antioch mint. The obverse has a very good radiate, cuirassed bust of Aurelian right with the officina letter Epsilon below and a full legend IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG. The reverse legend reads VABALATHVS VCR IM DR, with a laureate bust of Vabalathus right. This coin appears to have been “silvered” and shows a silvery bronze patina. This design shows in references RIC 381, Cohen 1 and Sear 11718.
