Description: Beautiful Duluth North Chanel / Breakwater Lighthouse Pin. Duluth North Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1910 to help guide ships into the Duluth harbor, prior to 1910 ship captains had only the South Breakwater light to rely on and many mishaps occurred. Building the light on the north pier helped remedy this problem. The light stands 43 feet above the surface of Lake Superior. It was the last of the three to be built and was completed in 1910. The Lighthouse Board requested this third Duluth light due to the narrow 300-foot width of the Duluth Ship Canal and the stormy weather that makes entry into the canal difficult. At the time, only the south breakwater was lit. The pin is approximately 3/4 of an inch in height and 3/8 of an inch long as you can see in the photo. Pin makes great tie tack / lapel pin or addition to your pin collection. Hard to find item, they make great gifts for your favorite Great lakes buff. Pins are stamped from metal then plated or hand painted. I hope you will treasure these memories as jewelry to be worn, and not merely as trinkets to be discarded and forgotten.
