Description: Dutch Apothecary Spice Rack Porcelain 12 Drawers in Wooden Box Antique Round Top This is a large and unusual, round topped, apothecary style wooden spice rack with twelve porcelain drawers and one door hiding an egg cabinet all labeled in Dutch. Stamped SUCIETE CERAMIQUE MAESTRICHT, MADE IN HOLLAND on the bottom of the drawers, with a rampant lion in the middle. All of the drawers have blue and green stripes on the top. It was probably made in the 1930’s or before. It can either be hung from the two hooks or set on a counter or shelf. This is a striking and beautiful piece in overall good antique condition. The wood does not appear to have any or at least not very much finish on it, rather it seems to have a hand rubbed, soft glow. There are scuffs consistent with age and some old tape residue that should rub off with some steel wool, but mostly it looks pretty good. There is an old metal stain on one top side, but since it is behind the facade, it is not very noticeable. At some point there was a backer piece made of homosote added that does not seem original, but it is useful for maintaining the structural integrity of the piece, which is still quite sturdy and solid. One of the porcelain drawers has been broken and expertly repaired at some point in time, the underside of the drawers shows most of the damage, from the front of the drawer there is only a faint hairline crack showing. It is not very noticeable. Some of the drawers have age spots inside, most do not.
