Description: Nicely rendered Dutch genre scene signed by listed painter Jules Edouard Mendes who worked mainly in Amsterdam in the second half of the 19th century into the first couple of decades of the 20th. He dealt mostly in genre pieces like this one. Most of his works are sold in the Netherlands and France, but some have passed through Sothebys and Christies. He was a student of the well-known Dutch painter Hendric Valkenburg. This work probably dates from the late 1800s. The painting is a charming Dutch scene of a woman sweeping a room she obviously shares with a family of chickens. The artist's fine traditional style and technique lend themselves perfectly to the almost amusing vigor the subject supplies to the task, overlooking the one chick who has gone renegade in the bottom right quadrant by the signature. The canvas has been recently cleaned and professionally relined within its original stretcher and 5" original gold leafed frame, which is in virtually perfect condition. Size is 29" X 33" in frame, 18" X23 - 1/2" in stretcher.
