Description: Original "Westward Ho" or "Pioneer" cover, by Gillinder & Sons of Philadelphia. PatternGlass.com features a very good article of how to tell the original from the reproductions. The detail in the reproductions just isn't there in the trees, mountains, rays of sun, etc. Additionally, according to PatternGlass.com: It is important in this pattern's reproductions to remember that more than one modern glass factory has made repros of this pattern. So some may be better than others so scrutiny of several of the design elements is necessary.First and foremost and EASIEST way to tell the original lid is by the finial. The detailing of the headdress & his hair are good, but the sine qua non is his tiny little Adams' Apple! You need to look very closely to this second photo. Hold yours up to the light - No apple, no good. Please see the third photo for the Adams' Apple. The final photo is taken in natural light so that you may see the detail of the Native figure. On the right side (proper left) of his crest, there is either a very small chip or a naturally smooth portion of glass. I did not see it until I held it in sunlight at an angle.
