Description: Gurage tribe headrest. Made in the early 1900’s. The Gurage are indigenous to Ethiopia. The history of the headrest is Egyptian 2649 BC. Hand carved from a solid block of vegetable wood. This example comes highly adorned. Red, pink and yellow Muruno hand blown beads. These are very old slave beads. Shells that also represent currency. Wood beads all beautiful encased. Shows complex patina and residual from Kabbe. 6 1/2” tall. Top is 5 1/8” X 2 3/4”. Bottom is 4 2/8” radius. Fantastic example of high status piece.
