These have never been offered for sale to the public previously, always owned by family members until we acquired them a short time ago. Fresh to the market, these are just about as good as they get. These are spectacular one of a kind hand made portraits. Along with the portraits this sale includes (Accompanied by) the original hand strung rope bound 22 page Discourse titled “A Discourse Firlevered at the funeral of Mrs. Bathsheba Sanford THE LATE CONSORT OF THE REV. David Sanford, Pastor of the Church in Midway” delivered at the funeral of Mrs. Bathsheba Sanford (the female subject of the portraits) of Medway Massachusetts on November 17th in 1801. Printed in Wrentham Massachusetts in 1801. By Nathaniel Heaton in 1801. The Discourse was read aloud at the funeral services of Bathsheba Sanford by Nathanael Emmons Pastor of the Church in Franklin Massachusetts on that day. CONDITION NOTES: Male subject notes: aside from copper nails on reverse, which could be original but likely not judging by condition, likely replaced at some point in the 19th century, the rest of this portrait, frame and glass are believed to be completely period to the late 18th century, down to the glass in the frame. Glass has likely never been replaced. Male subjects frame shows some wear around corners and some dings and wear but nothing that detracts from the overall eye appeal or appearance of the work. Male subject portrait does show some aging around the collar and lower chin, neck area, again nothing that subtracts from the stability or appeal of the piece. Just a wonderful work and a truly early treasure from early American life in the New England area. Female subject notes: glass likely replaced on frame sometimes in the late 19th century. Frame shows some losses on corners, still very appealing and stable frame, gorgeous indeed even with losses seen in photos. Losses on female portrait frame is very very minimal and does not stick out or detract from the subject! Small area on very bottom of Female portrait shows some tearing when removed from frame, very very minimal area of lifting and or tearing in this area. Maybe a few mm up from bottom edge that runs parallel to the edge in a lateral line. See photos for best idea, this is not noticeable unless your aware of its existence and it is extremely minimal, expected for a piece of this nature and age. Wood on both frames is stable and is strong, no rotting or instability is present on either piece. Glass is in good condition. Free of scuffs or scratches. Overall condition of both pieces is incredible. See photos and ask questions to best judge condition of this item!
