Description: Pearlware Childs Beaker or Christening Cup PLAYFUL FELLOWS ~ POND YACHT Staffordshire England c 1835 This is whimsical child's beaker or christening cup 1830-40. The cup would have been used to sip juice or milk. It stands 2-1/2 inches tall and 2-1/2 inches. Transfer printed in a rich and earthy sepia brown against a creamy earthenware with light ponded pearlware glaze. The top rim is hand painted in bright green. The cup features two images: children launching a pond yacht and a young lady playing with her pet dog (image titled THE PLAYFELLOWS). The cup would have been given as a reward of merit and a gift for a special occasion. It most likely was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid-19th century. The cup is in very good condition. A fine hairline through the letter W in the word PLAYFELLOWS. No other chips, cracks or repairs. A tiny glaze flake on the foot. Minor typical firing imperfections: stilt marks and glaze grit on the foot rim, original to the making. The design is simple and striking.
