Piper Autograph Letter Signed: "E.R. Hoar". 1p, 4x7. Concord, August 1, 1888. To Rev. George F. Piper. In full: "I should be happy to see you and your friends from Bedford at any time when it would be agreeable to them - and they could find me at home. But I do not feel sure of being at home next week - and so perhaps it would be better, as I ride about considerably that I should drive over to Bedford some morning this week. I will call at your house on Saturday next, Aug 4th, at about 10 A.M. if that is convenient for you, and you will send me word to that effect." Ebenezer R. Hoar (1816-1895) served as Grant's Attorney General from 1869-1870. He had been nominated by Grant as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1869, but was not confirmed by the Senate. In 1871, Hoar served on the joint high commission that framed the Treaty of Washington providing for an international tribunal to decide the "Alabama claims".
