He was also involved in search and rescue, the protection of marine resources and the support of the Space Shuttle program.The first project of an AWACS aircraft based on the military transport C-130 was proposed by Lockheed on its own initiative in 1981. The new development was called the EC-130 ARE (Airborne Radar Extension) and was designed to fill a niche between the E-2 Hawkeye and E-3 Sentry produced at that time in the United States. When designing, several options for placing the radar antenna were considered, including such as placing the antenna in a radome on the vertical tail (as it was implemented in the USSR on the An-71 a few years later) or spaced antennas in the tail and bow parts of the Nimrod AEW3 type.In 1991, the US Coast Guard became interested in the machine, which, due to the short range of the E-2 Hawkeye AWACS aircraft, needed a radar system with a longer patrol time. For this, one of the HC-130H aircraft was converted (modification of the C-130 with an increased flight radius). The machine received the designation EC-130V. The aircraft was equipped with an APS-125 radar with a locator in a fairing above the rear fuselage. The first flight took place on July 31, 1991.In 1993, due to cuts in the Coast Guard's budget, the EC-130V was transferred to the US Navy, where it was modified and given the designation NC-130H.
