Description: ECHTE KEMM BRAUNE KUCHENFABRIK HAMBURG W-GERMANY TIN BISCUIT COOKIE TRINKET BOX HINGED VINTAGEThis is a lovely estate sale item used as a biscuit, cookie or cake tin and painted with images of Hamburg, Germany on the lid and sides. The tin held Echte Kemm Braune Kuchen or Authentic Kemm Brown Cakes for a Hamburg specialty made by J. G. Kemm. The tin is very detailed and has descriptions for the various people, churches and scenes. The lid is painted with a harbor full of sailing ships and several people are on the dock or wharf. They appear to be bakers and vendors with their pastries. The sides have been painted with scenes of churches, soldiers, families with children and windmills. The background is gold and white with an old world or period design. On the lid, the title is Hamburger Trachten Am Anfang des 19, Jahrhunderts. There is the lady on the far left-hand side holding a basket and underneath is Vierlanderin (translated as Four Countries in Dutch), the Zuckerprobenstecher (translated in German as Sugar sample cup), the Sufswaren aus Blankenese (translated in German as confectionery products from Blankenese), the Stororterin mit Zuckerkringeln handelnd (translated in German as Stororterin holding sugar circles, with the word Stororterin listed as a Swedish word but not translated) in which the girl on the far right-hand side appears to be holding up a cookie that looks more like a pretzel, and the Zuckerbacker (translated in German as confectioner or sugar baker). The sides are depicted as follows: Echte Kemm Braune Kuchen seit uber 180 Jahren eine Hamburger spezialitat; Hamburger Ulan 1830 Hamburger Burgerwehr 1830; Ansicht des Linken Ufers der Binnenalster Vor 1842 and churches listed as St. Jacobi, St. Katharinen, St. Petri, St. Nikolai and St. Michaelis; and the fourth side lists Hamburger Burgerwehr 1830 again. The interior is clean with a few rubbed areas, however it has not been washed which I will leave to the buyer's discretion. There is a small dent on the bottom right-hand corner of the lid, and underneath the tin there are 2 dents and some scratches. The lid and sides have a few scratches and paint loss. The lid closes but has a slight gap in the front. The inside of the box is a golden color and is clean. This tin is a rectangular shape with a hinged lid and is not signed. The tin is about 5 inches wide x about 9 inches long, and about 2 1/2 inches tall. It weighs 8.2 ounces. The tin is in good vintage condition with some paint loss and wear. On the 6th photo there is a larger scratch between the 2 center steeples near the bottom. The lid fits snugly over the bottom. The tin could be used as a vanity or desk accessory or trinket box.
