Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) EDINBURGH, FROM CALTON HILL. Calton Hill is an eminence 355 feet above the level of the sea, with a precipitous face towards the south-west. On the north-west of the hill is the Observatory; on the south are the buildings of the great city prison; and on the apex the by no means universally admired Nelson Column, with a time-ball at the top. Close by are the twelve fine Doric Columns of the unfinished National Monument to the memory of the Scots who fell in the great French War. Most of these can be distinguished in our companion view from the Castle, which takes in Calton Hill; whilst the Castle appears in this, which looks up Princes Street. The entire view from Calton Hill is one of the finest panoramas in the world, but our photograph necessarily embraces only a small part of it.
