Description: Black Politics, Vol. 1, Nos. 6-8, Summer, 1968 (three issues in one volume) Author: Editorial Board Title: Black Politics, Vol. 1, Nos. 6-8, Summer, 1968 (three issues in one volume) Publication: Berkeley: Black Politics, 1968 Description: A single issue of this important black liberation journal published in Berkeley and closely affiliated with the Black Panther Party. Content for this issue includes "Teach Yourself to Shoot" by George Prosser (pseud.), "The Crude Art of Murder" by Cherkaoui Abdelhag, a crude multi-page comic of "Super Pig" by Gaynes, "Inside the Poor People's Campaign, Part I." by Onij-Nejjih, and reprinted articles from other underground publications, Afrocentric adverts, an editorial, etc. Black Politics was founded in 1968 by Japanese-American Black Panther, Richard Aoki (writing under the nom de plume Richard Assegai) - the Black Panthers first unofficial Minister of Information - and long-time white radical, Tom Sanders. Prominent Black Panthers contributed to the journal as did members of the fledgling Republic of New Africa, which represented Aoki's efforts to attract a wide range of contributors from various corners of the black nationalist movement. Articles focused on the repression of the Panthers, Marxism, and third world liberation struggles with frequent articles on weapons and urban guerrilla warfare tactics by "George Prosser." Prosser's articles attracted the attention of a congressional committee investigating riots, civil disobedience and the increased bombings by radical groups. Tom Sanders was alleged by the committee to be George Prosser and they subpoenaed him to appear with all of Black Politics' records. But Sanders successfully fought the subpoena and to our knowledge never appeared. Prosser was also alleged to have been Revolutionary Union founder, H. Bruce Franklin, but we find no evidence to support this. One of the most important theoretical journals of the black liberation movement, a crucial supporter of the Black Panthers, and unique for its multi-racial cast.
