"EDDIE" RICKENBACKER - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/09/1971 - HFSID 297329 EDDY RICKENBACKER Letter reporting that he has autographed a copy of his Seven Came Through Typed Letter signed: "Eddie Rickenbacker", 1 page, 7¼x10½. New York, N.Y., 1971 February 9. On personal letterhead to Peter J. Thayer, East Chicago, Indiana. In full: "Your letter of January 13 together with the copy of my book 'Seven Came Through' was awaiting me on my return to the city after an absence of approximately three weeks, and I was happy to autograph this book for you. It is being forwarded to you under separate cover today. [Item not included.] With reference to your visit to New York; the only suggestion I have to offer is that when you do come to the city you give my office a call with the hope that I am in. Frankly, I am out of the city so much of the time it would be impossible for me to make any definite date or promise when I would be in the city at this time. Again many thanks for your interest and best wishes. Sincerely". Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Edward Vernon"Eddie" Rickenbacker (1890-1973) commanded the famed 94th "Hat-in-the-Ring" Squadron during World War I. He downed 26 enemy aircraft, becoming America's "Ace of Aces", dueling Germany's "Red Baron" von Richtofen in the air, and receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor. After the War, the former auto racer developed his own auto manufacturing company, the Rickenbacker Motor Company (1922-1927), and he would later manage and then own the Indianapolis Speedway. He became General Manager of Eastern Airlines in 1935, and the company's President from 1938 until 1951, doing much to popularize civilian air travel. Rickenbacker survived a 1941 commercial airline crash, and cheated death once again during WWII. Acting as Special Consultant to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, "Rick" was aboard a B-17-D "Flying Fortress" when it crashed into the Pacific Ocean. From October 21 until November 13, 1942, the survivors of the eight-man crew floated in three small lifeboats in the shark-infested waters until their rescue. (This ordeal was the subject of his book Seven Came Through.) Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Fine condition. See more material from these signers: MAJOR EDWARD V.
