Description: Of Albanian ancestry, Fuad inherited the Egyptian monarchy after its independence thru his European-oriented father, the Khedive of Egypt during Ottoman rule in the 19th century. Earlier, Fuad was the first rector of the Egyptian University and President of the Egyptian Geographic Society. He reigned as king 1922-36, when he was succeeded by his son Farouk. Fuad endured two unhappy marriages, and was once shot in the throat by a brother-in-law.
