Description: ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. Typed letter signed (TLS) as a private citizen. June 25, 1958. 7.75 x 5.25. 2-lpages. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Suite 402, 4 West 40th Street, New York 18, N.Y. letterhead. Addressed to: My dear Friend. In part: "I am asking your help for the group of Democratic candidates for the Senate whom I believe to be most significantly superior to their opponents. They are young men with intellectual fibre and courage; and they have political maturity." The rather long letter continues on to list Mrs. Roosevelt's four recommended candidates and the four opponents they are running against. Further she states: "The men for whom I ask your help have the capacity to make positive contributions in foreign policy, education, science, and civil and economic freedom. I am not suggesting that they would answer alike to any stereotyped checklist of issues. But I do think they show clear signs of being among what Walter Lippman calls the authentic bearers of the central traditions of Western society." A long but interesting letter that illustrates how involved Eleanor was as an outspoken advocate of the Democratic Party. The letter also serves as a platform for soliciting contributions to help the four candidates, who she writes, "They do not have access to 'fat cat' or interest group support". Signed: Very sincerely yours [typed], Eleanor Roosevelt [in blue ink].
