Elementary Readers 1940s-50s: American Book Co, Scott Foresman and Bobbs-Merrill

Description: For sale as pictured: three mid-century elementary school readers: Friends and Neighbors, 1941, published by Scott, Foresman and Company. Compiled by William S. Gray and May Hill Arbuthnot. Our Good Neighbors, 1950, published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company. Compiled by William H. Burton, Clara Belle Baker, and Grace K. Kemp. Around Green Hills, 1953, published by the American Book Company. Compiled by Emmett A. Betts and Carolyn M. Welch. These are classic examples of the type and style of reading text that elementary school students would receive from mid-century until the 1990s: novel size, lots of individual stories with many often bright illustrations (some are in black and white.) All are in well-used condition but ideal for collectors, education history buffs, or those nostalgic for a foregone time in reading education. Here are the condition notes: All three are elementary school readers from 1941, 1950, and 1953 respectively. All were used in school and show wear consistent with that. Exteriors are cloth picture boards - no dust jackets - and show significant wear including well rounded corners, many places around the edges where the cloth has worn through, fading, and light soiling. Interiors are generally in good condition but have a mix of school markings (stamps, for instance), inscribed names of teachers or students, and light staining from sticky elementary student hands. The bindings of "Our Good Neighbors" and "Around Green Hills" are in good condition, but the text block of "Friends and Neighbors" has separated almost completely from the covers -- only the cloth attached to the front cover keeps them from pulling apart. The text block itself is in good condition.
