Description: I'm interested as an artist in maps, patterns and symbols, and what they communicate in relation to geography, geopolitics, identity and culture. These very modern designs adopted by the prefectures of Japan as their emblems have been a great source of inspiration for me. A little bit of background information on them: There are 47 prefectures currently, which consist of 43 prefectures (県, ken) proper, two urban prefectures (府, fu, Osaka, and Kyoto), one "circuit" or "territory" (道, dō, Hokkaido) and one "metropolis" (都, to, Tokyo). The Meiji Fuhanken sanchisei administration created the first prefectures to replace the provinces of Japan in 1868. The Japanese prefectures have beautiful translations into English: 北海道 Hokkaido (North Sea Road) 東北 Tohoku (East North): 青森 Aomori (Blue Forest); 岩手 Iwate (Rock Hand); 秋田 Akita (Autumn Rice Field); 山形 Yamagata (Mountain Shape); 宮城 Miyagi; (Palace Castle); 福島 Fukushima (Good Luck Island). 関東 Kanto (Gate East): 茨城 Ibaraki (Thorn Castle); 栃木 Tochigi (Japanese Horse Chestnut Tree); 群馬 Gunma (Herd of Horses); 埼玉 Saitama (Tip Ball); 千葉 Chiba (Thousand Leaf): 東京 Tokyo (East Capital); 神奈川 Kanagawa (God Apple River); 中部 Chubu (Central Part): 新潟 Niigata (New Lagoon); 富山 Toyama (Rich Mountain); 石川 Ishikawa (Stone River); 福井 Fukui (Good Luck Well); 山梨 Yamanashi (Mountain Pear); 長野 Nagano (Long Field); 岐阜 Gifu (Divergence Hill); 静岡 Shizuoka (Silent Hill); 愛知 Aichi (Love Wisdom). 関西 Kansai (Gate West): 三重 Mie (Triple); 滋賀 Shiga (Overgrown Congratulation); 京都 Kyoto (Capital Capital); 大阪 Osaka (Big Slope); 兵庫 Hyogo (Soldier Storage); 奈良 Nara (Apple Good); 和歌山 Wakayama (Japanese Poem Mountain). 九州 Kyushu (and Okinawa) (Nine States): 福岡 Fukuoka (Good Luck Hill); 佐賀 Saga (Support Congratulation); 長崎 Nagasaki (Long Cape); 熊本 Kumamoto (Bear Book); 大分 Oita (Big Minute); 宮崎 Miyazaki (Palace Cape); 鹿児島 Kagoshima (Deer Child Island); 沖縄 Okinawa (Offshore Rope) The design is available as a limited edition giclée print (unframed) in standard A-sizes. It's printed on high quality Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper (for a slightly softer effect) My prints are printed expertly and delivered to you by various partners.
