HASartist:Francois Bealu (1932-2020)Artist French painter, engraver and draftsmanFrançois Béalu is an engraver, draftsman and painter born in 1932 in Amilly. He died in 2020 in Tréduder, Brittany, where he had lived since 1971François Béalu was born in Amilly (Loiret) in 1932. As a teenager he studied in Joigny (Yonne), where he was the only student in the optional drawing course. He discovered the wild coasts of northern Brittany with his uncle Marcel Béalu during a trip in 1956, a trip he felt was an awakening to life. Then, in 1957, he left for Stockholm where he earned his living in a wood veneer factory, and began to draw. He undertakes a long trip by scooter to Lapland, and returns by Oslo where he discovers the sculptures of Vigeland park. Back in France in 1960, he opened his first bookstore, La Mandragore, at 17 rue de l'Ouest in Paris, devoted to fantasy literature and science fiction. François Béalu engraved his first board in 1963. Two years later he moved to rue des Grands Augustins. He continues drawing and participates in the illustration of the volumes of the Encyclopédie Planète collection. Engraving becomes his dominant activity. His first boards are a reflection of his earlier, phantasmagorical drawings, where organic forms dominate. Total break in 1971. François Béalu leaves Paris and settles in the Côtes-d'Armor. He then devoted himself entirely to engraving. After two years of personal research he begins a series of bodies and rocks. The alignments of Carnac and the Quiberon peninsula inspired him to create the Megaliths series, Expedition to the Megaliths in 1982 and Return to the Megaliths in 1983, two large engraved frescoes three meters long. The preferred engraving technique is then etching and aquatint for these works that are both mineral and organic. In 1987 a new period begins with the abandonment of mineral for the vegetable and the return to the drypoint. As seen in The White Valley, the Vaguely Oriental Triptych, and a series of large landscapes, the more gestural technique offers more freedom of movement. It was in Mars 1990 that François Béalu met Gilles Clément, engineer and landscaper. He presented her with a project for an artist's book l'Éloge de la friche, which was published in 1994 by Lacourière-Frélaut. Eight drypoints by François Béalu with a text by Gilles Clément will make up this work. This meeting will be the starting point for a friendship and a shared view of the landscape. In Tunis, where he is taking part in an exhibition, his gaze is drawn to the ceramic tiles on the walls of the old houses in the medina. They inspire geometric series and multiples. With the writer and philosopher Claude Louis-Combet, he worked on an artist's book, Paysage deslimits, which was published in 1999 by Éditions Folle Avoine. The Musée des Jacobins in Morlaix devoted a personal exhibition to him in 1996 and published the catalog raisonné of his engraved work. He travels to Poland and participates in the exhibition Quinze artistes des Côtes d'Armor in Olsztyn. The early 2000s was a period of research in several directions for François Béalu. A new book, L'Épuisement de la ligne, is published with a text by Sylvie Lawrence-Friedman. He exhibited a hundred of these dry points, as part of Art in the chapels, in 2001. The artist also creates small elements of sculpture and begins printing on linen canvas. He designs an interactive CD-Rom Le Carré infini with Commedia Editions. He publishes the book The Strategy of the Perimeter, with a text by S. Lawrence and starts the first works of the Characters series.
