Brownie, Eric’s 1956 sunburst Fender Stratocaster was most famously used on Layla and became known as the world’s most expensive guitar when it was sold for $450,000 on June 24, 1999. Eric used his cherry red Gibson ES-335 extensively throughout his career with The Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith and later during his solo career but most famously on Cream’s US farewell tour then at the Royal Albert Hall. Eric Clapton’s 1992 live performance in Windsor, England, was recorded for a session of MTV Unplugged and was soon released as an album. He played his 1939 Martin 000-42 on several songs, including a slow version of his rock anthem Layla. Eric’s 1964 Gibson SG, commonly known as The Fool quickly became a cultural icon of the swinging 60’s and one of the first artistic impressions of psychedelia on a musical instrument. Widely recognised as the first art guitar created by artists, it evokes the magical years of the mid-late 60’s, with it’s drug fuelled culture and 1967’s Summer of Love. Eric assembled the parts from three Fender Stratocasters to create Blackie. Purchased from a Nashville music shop in 1970, Eric brought them back to England and carefully selected a ’56 body, a ’57 neck and the pickups from another. Blackie was Clapton’s main instrument for live performances and studio recordings from it’s debut at the Rainbow Concert in 1973 until it was retired in 1985. It had been used for every album recorded during that period and at such famous events as the ARMS charity concerts in 1983 and Live Aid in 1985. The illustrations of these famous guitars are original and have been produced by George Morgan following extensive research. This is not a photograph.
