Description: Esconichthys apopyris Mazon Creek Blade Fish Lung Fish fossil Pos/Neg concretion This exceptional specimen of Esconichthys apopyris Mazon Creek Blade Fish fossil was collected in Braidwood, Ill from Peabody Coal Pit 11. The detailed specimen includes both the positive and negative halves of the concretion, exhibits all the textbook anatomical parts of the fish, including the full body, "fins", and two distinct black "eyes", as well as exhibits coloration and 3D attributes, including the body and eyes protruding from the matrix slightly. This is an excellent specimen in that all the body parts are present and contrast aesthetically against the darker matrix, whereas most fossil specimens of Blade Fish are usually indistinct with little or no detail. Known to collectors as blades, these fish are thought to be the larval form of a lungfish, but its exact taxonomic affinities are still under discussion. It has even been proposed that they are larval amphibians. The genus derives its name from ESCONI, the acronym for Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois. The dark structures are neither eyes nor otoliths; their precise identification is as yet undetermined.
