Description: Ethel Merman signed autograph photo 11 x 14 1934 This photo of Ethel Merman is inscribed: To Loretta In sincere appreciation of your marvelous work. Ethel Merman Condition: See photos: Top right corner is a bit of a mess. Bottom right corner paper has a thin spot due to removal from a scrapbook. The back shows signs of having been removed from a scrapbook. "We're Not Dressing 1934" written in ink in bottom right corner. For those of us who grew up in the 1970s, Ethel Merman wasn't exactly a fox. But look at her here! I presume this is from 1934 while she was working on "We're Not Dressing" with Carole Lombard. I guess she's most famous for her rendition of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from the show Gypsy. And she was wonderful as Lt. Hurwitz in Airplane! She was huge on Broadway. The Loretta in the inscription seems to have been a hairdresser at Paramount (or at least most of the other autographed photos in the scrapbook were Paramount stars) from around 1930 to 1940. The Internet has a few photos of Carole Lombard having her hair done by a Loretta Francel, who is sometimes referred to as her personal hairdresser or her studio hairdresser. The only provenance of these from my source said something about Loretta being a hairdresser, so I'm assuming that Loretta is Loretta Francel. Sometimes the internet spell it Francell. IMDB says Loretta Francel was born in 1896 and died in 1980 in Lebanon, Oregon. I acquired these from an auction in Eugene, Oregon last year. This will be shipped for free in the US and insured and all that jazz. If one of the Ebay-recognized authenticators finds that this is not the authentic signature, I'll take it back. If you just change your mind after you receive it, I won't take it back. Please ask any questions you have.
